The Book I Wish Every Christian Parent Had Before Their Child Became a Teenager

14 practical lessons plus a 14-week companion workbook to help Christian parents stay connected, set wiser boundaries, build responsibility and prepare their teenagers for adulthood — one conversation, one week and one lesson at a time.

14 PRACTICAL LESSONS  •  14-WEEK ACTION WORKBOOK  •  3 TOOLS FOR REAL-LIFE PARENTING MOMENTS
Christian family portrait showing parents and teenagers together See What's Inside

If you've ever lain awake wondering why your teenager has gone quiet, why ordinary conversations keep turning into arguments, or why the child who once told you everything now says almost nothing, keep reading.

You've tried talking calmly. You've tried setting firmer rules. You've tried stepping back and hoping things would settle on their own.

Some days it helps, for a while. Other days the door closes again anyway.

You replay conversations afterward, wondering what you could have said differently.

Your own parents raised you on "because I said so," and it seemed to work — so it's fair to wonder why the same approach doesn't land the same way now.

Maybe you've read parenting books before, good ones even, written for a season that stopped applying the moment your child turned twelve.

Maybe you've prayed about it more times than you can count, and still felt like you were figuring it out as you went.

Here's something worth saying plainly: adolescence doesn't just change your child. It changes what parenting itself needs to become. Most parents learn that gradually, through trial and error, alongside a relationship that matters more than getting it perfect.

What tends to weigh on parents most isn't any single argument. It's the quiet distance that can grow in between them — the sense of not knowing your own child as well as you used to.

That's the part worth taking seriously — not any one difficult evening, but where things seem to be headed if nothing changes.

That ache is real. It's exactly why this book exists.

It sounds obvious once you say it out loud. But most of us are still parenting the fifteen-year-old the same way we parented the five-year-old — and wondering why it keeps backfiring.

The Core Idea Behind the Book

Your relationship with your teenager runs on the same need it always has — connection. But the method has to grow up alongside the child. Obedience got a five-year-old through the day. It will not carry a sixteen-year-old into good decisions when you are not in the room.

What has to grow, alongside your teenager, is your own approach — from control toward wisdom, from rules alone toward rules with reasons, from managing behaviour toward shaping character.

What This Guide Is Actually Built to Change

This guide will not make your teenager agree with you every time. It will not remove every argument from your home. What it is built to do is give you a way to stay close to your teenager through the arguments — not just after them.

It is built around three shifts: conversations that would normally shut down within a minute, correction that lands without the relationship paying the price, and a parent who feels less like they are guessing, chapter by chapter.

Mother and teenage daughter sharing a warm, supportive moment

Connection grows when parents and teenagers feel safe enough to keep talking.

Is This Book For You?

  • You want your teenager to respect you, not just obey you out of fear.
  • You've noticed conversations getting shorter, quieter, or more distant.
  • You want practical steps, not just theory.
  • You want Scripture and prayer woven through the advice, not tacked on as an afterthought.
  • You're willing to look honestly at your own reactions, not only your teenager's behaviour.

A Few Lines From Inside the Book

"What worked at seven may not work at seventeen."
— Chapter 9, I Wish I Knew That Discipline Would Have to Change
"Not: 'What is wrong with you?' But: 'What is happening with you?' One assumes defect. The other invites a story."
— Chapter 8, I Wish I Knew Their Behaviour Was Sometimes a Cry for Help
Mother and teenage daughter sitting in emotional tension on a sofa

Sometimes the tension you can see is only part of the deeper story.

"Correct the behaviour. Protect the person."
— Chapter 9, I Wish I Knew That Discipline Would Have to Change
"Listening does not mean approving everything your teenager says. It means understanding before deciding what response is needed."
— Chapter 3, I Wish I Knew How Much They Needed to Be Heard

Edwin Mercy, author of I Wish I Knew Before They Became Teenagers

A Word From Edwin Mercy

My name is Edwin Mercy. I'm not a licensed therapist, and I don't have parenting figured out any more than the next parent. What I do have is a conviction: adolescence, however hard it can feel some days, is a season Christian parents can walk through with real wisdom, grace and prayer.

That conviction is what this book comes from — fourteen chapters, each built the way a real conversation with a wise friend would go: a story, an honest lesson, Scripture, prayer, and something practical to try that week.

I wanted something practical enough for an ordinary Tuesday, and honest enough for the harder days — a resource that takes both the parenting and the faith seriously, without turning into either a dry manual or a long sermon.

Mother and son reconnecting with warmth and hope

Hope grows when reconnection begins, one conversation at a time.

One Last Thing…

One day your teenager will make important decisions when you are not in the room.

The goal is not simply to raise a child who obeys while you are watching. It is to help raise a young person who can carry wisdom, responsibility, faith and character beyond your supervision.

You cannot control every decision your teenager will make. But you can become more intentional about how you listen, correct, guide, reconnect and gradually let go while these years are still unfolding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the main guide and companion workbook together?

The simplest approach is one chapter and one workbook week at a time. Read the matching chapter in the guide, then use the workbook to reflect, pray, have the conversation and practise the lesson during the week. You can also read the guide first and return to the workbook later.

How is the package delivered?

Digitally, as PDF files, available after successful payment — the main guide, the 14-week workbook, and all three bonus resources.

Is this only for parents already having a hard time?

No. It's written for any parent of a child roughly 10–17 — whether things are already tense, or you're preparing ahead of the teenage years.

Do I need to belong to a particular denomination to use this?

No. The package is rooted in general Christian faith and Scripture, not tied to any one denomination.

Will there be a print version?

Not yet. For now it's a digital package you can read on your phone, tablet, or computer — or print at home if you prefer working on paper.

What if I have trouble accessing my files?

Contact us directly and we'll help you resolve it.

Why is this different from other parenting content?

Because it pairs a guide that explains the principles with a workbook that turns them into a week-by-week practice — and it takes both the parenting and the faith seriously, without turning into either a dry manual or a long sermon.
